The isotope group of HCRM participated at the 3rd Research Coordination Meeting (RCM) of the IAEA F32010 “Understanding of Nitrate Sources in Connected River and Groundwater Systems Through Linking Nitrate Isotopes and Contaminants of Emerging Concern” project that was held in Malaga (Spain) in 6-9 October 2025.
The group presented the findings of the investigation in Kifissos River Basin revealing widespread nitrate pollution driven mainly by urban and wastewater-related sources, with clear seasonal and downstream trends. Nitrate isotopes indicated dominant organic inputs and active nitrogen transformation processes. Contaminants of emerging concern, mainly pharmaceuticals and other urban tracers, were found throughout the basin, highlighting continuous wastewater pressures, especially under low-flow conditions.
