The isotope group of HCRM participated at the 3rd Research Coordination Meeting (RCM) of the IAEA F33027 “Isotopic Assessment of the Impacts of Climatic and Hydrological Changes on Wetland-groundwater Ecosystem Interactions” project that was held virtually in 6-9 May 2025.
The group presented the findings of the investigation in the Schinias–Marathon wetland, showing distinct spatial and seasonal patterns in water quality and isotopic composition. The results highlighted the influence of coastal processes such as salinity intrusion and evaporation, limited interaction between surface water and groundwater during the monitoring period, and the dominant role of surface water inputs in wetland recharge. The analysis also indicated that nitrate mainly originates from organic sources and soils, while in-wetland processes likely contribute to nitrate removal.
